Guest Post- Jen & Kam from The Closet Narcissist

Hi there – we're Jenarcissist and KameraWhore (the Narcissisters), and we’re the gals behind “the closet narcissist.” We were really excited to be paired up with Nnenna for our first ever guest posting opportunity from Ashley at Two Eyes in the Mirror. The mission of our blog is to promote and celebrate self-love…to remind you of how amazing you are! So we thought we would combine the fashion talk behind Nnenna’s blog with the self-image talk behind ours and explore how the way you dress can reflect, and sometimes enhance, the way you feel about yourself.

Of course, your real source of confidence should come from inside you, regardless of how you look. But let’s be honest; appearance matters to most, if not all, of us to an extent, and the way you present yourself to the world is often a reflection of how you see yourself...or perhaps how you would LIKE to be seen by the world or the kind of attitude you'd like to develop.

We thought we’d share with you a couple of outfits that make us personally feel confident.

Jen:

I usually feel at my most confident when I’m wearing a dress. There’s just something about the girliness and how great you can feel in a dress that really suits your body shape. But sometimes, at least for me, dressing up just isn’t comfortable. I unconsciously sit up straighter and feel more put together, and that can definitely add to my confidence level, but for an average, everyday look, I want to feel like I can put my feet up! So the outfit I’m sharing is really nothing especially creative, but it does have several confidence-inducing features, and I think the outfit pretty accurately portrays my personality for everyday…girly, fun, comfortable – and comfortable with myself!

First, the yellow shirt. I always feel more confident when I wear bright colors. The shirt is comfortable but still has a nice shape that’s a step above a T-shirt. It has ruching on the sleeves, which adds a little visual interest. My black jeggings are a fairly recent purchase; I had initially dismissed jeggings as something that would not flatter my body type and would feel uncomfortable, til I found these pull-ons at Wal-Mart...and I love them! Not only do I feel awesome when I wear them, but they’re also comfortable. Then you have the jean vest (which I got for about 3 bucks at a thrift store). When I wear it, it just makes me feel more fun; it’s not something I can really put my finger on. Then you have these cute floral wedges I got from Target. Okay, I admit they are not the most comfortable shoes on the planet, and they are even a little hard to walk in, so I wouldn’t wear them to stroll around town…but they’re very feminine and trendy and make me feel girly and stylish when I wear them. Last is my necklace. Kam and I have an online shop where we have 22 designs (so far) of self-love-boosting necklaces we make by hand. Whenever I wear the various designs, just knowing they’re there somehow courses the messages through my subconscious all day long. I find myself reaching up to touch them all the time without thinking about it, and every time I do, the message is reaffirmed again. We have messages like, “Stay Confident,” “I Don’t Have to be Perfect,” “Invincible,” etc. They’ve become integral parts of my outfits every single day. Sometimes I will wear one that has a message of how I WANT to feel that day, and before long, I do!

Kam:

I am a jeans girl through and through. My outfit is simple but the epitome of what makes me feel confident. My jeans are a skinny pair that I picked up at Old Navy several years back. My husband encouraged me to buy them even though I was worried I wouldn’t be able to pull them off. Three years later, and these jeans have cycled in and out of my go-to, feel-good pile of clothes. I tend to go through periods of time when I don’t feel like my body looks especially flattering in them. However, I am trying to overcome that, so recently, these jeans have made a comeback! They are nicely worn, quite slim-fitting, and they’re not low-rise, which can actually sometimes be more flattering.

My shirt is a recent purchase made at *gasp* Wal-Mart. Surprisingly, this store is actually starting to carry some cute items. This blouse is made by L.E.I. and was a steal on the clearance rack for $3. In my mind, it conveys a bit of a punk, rockabilly essence with its plaid pattern and ruffled accents. To me, this gives off a youthful vibe that I definitely want to hold onto. It also makes me feel like I appear as a creative, open-minded gal, which is truly who I am. I must admit that when I wear this shirt, I like to keep the top button undone. I rarely feel comfortable showing off my cleavage, but in this shirt, it makes me feel sexy to do so. I’m not sure why this is so, but it just feels okay in this particular blouse. I feel sexy and super confident about my body. Score!

We found this great blog post about wearing what fits you RIGHT NOW…no matter what your shape or size and despite the fact that you might wish to lose a few pounds. It’s important to dress for what your body looks like in the present moment and play to its strengths because it DOES have strengths. As Katie writes, when she was ashamed of her body and feeling that she was too heavy, she would either stuff herself into clothes that were too small (“part self-punishment for gaining weight, and part ‘motivation’ to lose it) or too big (“this allowed me to hide my body – and my shame – underneath layers”). Eventually, she embraced her body as it was and began dressing in a way that was more comfortable and more suited to her body type. When you do this, you're naturally going to gain more confidence because you'll see what a difference it makes.

If you want to portray a more confident self and therefore actually become more confident over time, you can do that partly by finding and defining a personal style that suits who you are, dressing to flatter your body type, taking good care of yourself, and wearing things that just make you feel good. And that certainly doesn't have to equate to expensive.

And, just for fun since Nnenna posts such fabulous knitted creations, we thought we’d share with you Jenarcissist’s first ever crocheting project. It isn’t anything yet! But it’s full of promise, right?!

What does the way you dress say about you? Is it an accurate reflection of your personality? Does it reflect how you feel about yourself?

On Nnenna's Needles #8

What's better than cozying up with a good book and a soft blanket on a gray day? :)

Spiraling Star Blanket

I made this blanket for just such days, when I'm curled up on my little couch in my dorm room reading a novel.  It's the perfect size to cover my lap and my feet and made from a soft wool blend.  I was of course immediately drawn to the star shape that radiates out from the center.  Also, due to some miscalculation on my part, I ran out of yarn at the end.  Luckily, I had some of this multicolored ribbon left over from some craft project, so I used that to finish it off and crochet a smooth edge around the border.

On another note- in approximately one week I will be on spring break, returning to my sunny home state of CA!  Only two midterms and one paper stand in my way- let the countdown begin! :D

looking forward to...

Last week, we had a few days of really nice weather- sunny and around 50/60 degrees.  Of course this meant that I immediately started to pretend that spring had come, even though I knew better.  I went out with bare legs and wore my lighter coat!  I also created these sets, dreaming about how I would bare my legs in even warmer weather.  Today I drew back my curtains to discover that it had snowed again, so I'm just going to close my curtains and pretend it's spring in my little room.

1. Linen Blend-Short w/ Striped Belt: $14.80- I love the navy color and crispness of these shorts, as well as the preppy striped belt that they come with.  Both would be great basic additions to my closet!
2. Tulip Romper: $12.50- I didn't really jump on the romper trend last season because I was worried that they would look terrible on me.  Since then I've realized that it's all about the fit, so I'm ready to try again, and what better romper to start with than this delightful, springy number? =)
3. Fab Denim Shorts: $10.50- Dark denim shorts at a really good price?  Yes, please!

1. Twelve Gore Skirt: $15.80- This is a very classic-looking skirt and I simply love the silver buttons going down the front.
2. Mid Striped Skirt: $16.80- I haven't tried the midi length on my body (I'm still coming round to maxis!) but this skirt looked so good on the model that I just had to include it.  Plus, I really need some more stripes in my life!
3. Striped Ruffled Skirt: $16.80- Stripes! Fun! Summery!  Can it be mine, please? :D

1. Leatherette Gladiator Sandals: $23.80- I love how it laces up in the front (I've been really into my lace-up boots all winter!) and the zipper in the back is essential!
2. Braided Leatherette Sandals: $19.80- I really like the low wedge on these and the color would fill a gap in my shoes collection.
3. Canvas Mary Jane Flats: $16.80- Too. Cute. For. Words!
4. Double Ankle Strap Wedges: I think this give off a really cool, modern vibe and would look amazing paired with many a spring/summer dress!
5. Cutout Suedette Wedges: $26.80- The cutouts give the toesies a little breather/look cool and I really like the chunky heel.

Tell me- which of these picks do you like?
Happy President's Day everyone! =)

animal kingdom

For today's post, I teamed up with Anna from Visions of Memories to create an animal-print themed look.  We both chose something with animal print from our closets and made an outfit.  I thought it would be a great time to show off this leopard-print sweater that I thrifted from Saver's.

black sweater and belt- forever 21, leopard sweater-
thrifted (Saver's), jeggings- Plato's Closet, boots- GoJane

This sweater used to be a little bit longer and before I could wear it with leggings, but unfortunately I'm pretty sure it shrunk in the dryer.  I definitely wanted to wear it belted, but it looked dumb belted on its own, so I threw the black sweater on top.  The neckline is a little high and it also has these side slits that I don't love, so if I ever get around to it I might try to alter it.  Regardless, I love the print and it was a steal at under $5!

I've been furiously knitting the past few days, working on one of my projects for Pay it Forward 2011 and tomorrow I'm off to Joann's to get some supplies.  I also picked up some lovely pearly pink yarn that I'm eventually going to use to make a cardigan for myself.  I'm so excited about the stuff I'm knitting right now, which is the way it has to be otherwise I'll never complete the project!  So I'm hoping to spend the weekend being crafty and finishing up the project I'm currently working on so that I can send it out early next week.  What will you guys be up to this weekend?  Happy Friday :D

Oh, and don't forget to check out Visions of Memories later today to see her outfit!

On Nnenna's Needles #7

Meet my good friend Grenadine!

Grenadine

Grenadine is my first (and really my only) foray into crocheting!  We had a session during my weekly knitting club meetings where we all learned the basics of crochet and this is what I decided to make.  I've made a few knitted toys in my day, but Grenadine is definitely my favorite, which I think is funny since I crochet so little!  Grenadine is usually perched on my bedpost, just as pictured, but one day I took her for a little outing to show her off to some friends.  A stranger saw her peeking out of my bag and commissioned me to make another horse for her friend's birthday!  So now meet Grenadine's friend:

same patten as above

I didn't name him because I knew I wasn't going to get to keep him, but in their short time together, he and Grenadine became fast friends! =)

minty valentine

Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

cardigan, jeans- forever 21, mint green tunic- thrifted (saver's), boots- Wanted

earrings- forever 21, ring- H&M

flowers in the office

Apologies for the longer absence than I intended last week.  My computer was infected, so over the weekend they took it away from me and reinstalled my operating system, which was very scary!  Now I have it back and I think it's good as new, but I still have to put all my stuff back on.

Anyways, on to the good stuff!  Today I plan to eat as much chocolate as possible without getting sick and hang out with my friends.  Nothing terribly exciting, but it still should be a good time :)  This is not a typical V Day outfit, but I think it works for the casual evening I have planned, while still giving a nod to the holiday!  Tell me, how do you guys plan to spend Valentine's Day?

On Nnenna's Needles #6

I cannot get through the winter months without my glittens.
What are glittens, you ask?  Why, they're gloves + mittens!

Convertible Mittens

Flying Purple Glittens

The first pair I made in 2008 and they were my first attempt ever at some sort of hand covering.  I picked that yarn because I loved the combination of blue and purple, then added the cutest little star button as a closure.  The second pair came about because I had this skein of royal purple that I loved and felt would look great as glittens!  I've made two pairs because I am a firm believer that glittens are absolutely essential during the cold months!  They keep my hands warm (especially the second pair, which are really thick!) while also allowing me to use my fingers when needed.  Do any of you own a pair of glittens, or do you call them something else?

feeling like a cowgirl

I've been wearing my new boots almost everyday recently and this day, I decided to pair them with my black ruffled skirt for an all-over western vibe.  I wore this teal dress underneath the skirt so that it looks like a top because I think that as a dress it has a really unflattering fit on me.  Also, I just had to wear these star-print tights because the color of the stars matches the top exactly.  Finally, to finish off the outfit and hold up the skirt because it is one size too big, I added this wide stretch black belt.  I felt like I was in middle school again learning how to line dance during PE, hence the following pose.  Did any of you guys learn line dancing or square dancing when you were little?

dress (worn as top), cami (underneath), skirt,
earrings, belt- forever 21, tights- gift, boots- Wanted

I had a pretty nice weekend- Friday involved falling into a food coma after stuffing myself with delicious Indian food.  Then Saturday, I went out to dinner again, as a mini-reunion for the people I lived with in Spain this past summer.  It was so great to see them again and catch-up about our lives.  Then yesterday, I attended a lovely superbowl party with most of my friends, drank some delicious Riesling, then went to a dance party!  All in all, a really good time! :)  Tell me about your weekend?  Did the team you were rooting for win yesterday?

P.S. If you haven't already, give me a little hello on twitter! I'd love to hear from you :)

On Nnenna's Needles #5

Thank you everyone for your supportive comments on my last post!  It was just really frustrating in the moment, but I felt miles better after reading all of your lovely comments and the day after was better as well!  All right, now we have, a day later than normal, another installment of On Nnenna's Needles!

Brea Bag
When I'm not carrying around all of the books and notebooks I need for class, I like to carry a smaller bag.  I also really like bags with a long strap, so I can sling them across my body and have free hands if necessary.  So when I saw this pattern, I knew it would fit right in with my style.  I chose this color because I love burgundy and also because I thought the detail of the pattern would look really nice in a darker, rich color.

The body of the bag was actually knitted in several pieces, which I then sewed together.  After doing that, I went to Joann's and chose a complementary fabric to line the bag.  First I attached the lining to the knitting, then I added a zipper as a closure.  Finally, I sewed on the brown braided strap that I also purchased from Joann's.  I'm rather pleased with the end result and only wish I remembered to use this purse more often!

Also, I was featured yesterday on the lovely blog Kenzie Faith!  Check it out if you want! :D

just one of those days

Today has just been one of those days... more about that later, let's do the outfit first.  I styled up this outfit in accordance with the challenge on Diya's blog- the item was boyfriend blazer.  Also making their first appearance here, please welcome my new boots!

blazer- american eagle, tee- forever 21, skirt (thfrited)
and tights- Savers, boots- Wanted

they're so comfortable, you don't even know!

Now onto my day: WARNING- stop reading here if you don't want to hear my complaints about a crappy day.  I couldn't sleep last night, which means it was impossible for me to wake up in time for my earliest class, so I missed it.  I went to my next two classes, which were fine, then came back to take outfit pictures for today.  So far it was a fine day, not great, but fine.  Then, I remember I have to call this company and yell at them for not shipping my order.  Remember how I said I was getting a new camery toy?  Well I ordered a tripod off Amazon, thanks to Ashley's recommendation and it was supposed to arrive last week.  I received a shipping confirmation email and everything, so when it hadn't arrived by Monday, I decided to call the company and find out what was going on.  It turns out that not only had my item not shipped (and they'd billed me already and everything?!), but the tripod was out of stock and wouldn't be in stock until the end of February.  So after spending nearly an hour on the phone with them trying to figure out my best options, since they'd pretty much shafted me, I finally get them to give me a refund and order a different, but similar tripod from Amazon directly.  Hopefully I have no more problems on that front.

Meanwhile, as I'm fighting with the customer service representative on the phone, I'm trying to check my email on my computer because I think it is strange that I haven't received a single email all day.  It turns out that my school identity number/password or my computer was compromised and is jeopardizing my school's network.  This means that my account is completely locked and I'm freaking out because I don't know what the implications of this situation are.  I'm wondering, "How was it compromised?  How am I going to access my email?  What if my machine was compromised, do I have to get a new computer?"  I call the Technical Services help desk and thankfully, after some manuevering they are able to help me unlock my account.  Unfortunately, the guy says he doesn't really know the root of the problem, meaning that my account may lock up again, and tells me that I need to take my computer to the student techs.  So, now I have to back up all my files and then run some scans and hope that everything resolves itself.  Of course, due to all the frustration and the stress, I had a massive headache all evening...

So, that's the sitch.  If you've read all the way to this point, thank you for listening to me ramble and I'll promise to be in a more positive mood next post- I'm already feeling better as I type this out :)
