la petite fille

Putting together this outfit made me feel like a little girl again, playing in my mom's closet, but in the best way possible!  I'd really wanted these little oxford booties, but all the ones I really liked were out of my price range.  Then, I stumbled across these randomly in a Plato's Closet, and they were my size and only $8! I mean, what are the chances?!  I was in a girly girl mood, so I added the knee-high socks and flouncy, colorful skirt for a slightly dressy causal outfit that I wore to a going-away party.

my attempt at being an innocent little girl, lol

Can I just reiterate how excited I am to wear my Halloween costume?!  Since I wasn't allowed to celebrate Halloween growing up (the first time I was able to dress up was my freshman year in college) I really like to go all out!  Also, for a while I was really unexcited about my costume, which was bumming me out, but once I decided to sew part of the costume myself, I was able to bring my vision to life.  What I especially love about Halloween here at school is that there are several days of parties and activities!  Things kicked off yesterday and will continue up through Sunday.  I'm especially looking forward to Saturday, when most of the parties and "trick-or-treating' ;) happens, and also Sunday, for the annual YSO show that's performed.  So it will be a busy and fun weekend :) What plans do you guys have for Halloween?

sucker for a sweater dress

I love sweater dresses!!  They make it so easy to throw together a cute outfit and I buy at least 2 or 3 every fall/winter!  This particular one is one of my favorites because of it's subtle blue/gray color.  Toss on some boots and voilà, I'm dressed!  Also, threw on my new trench because it was raining and I'm loving this classic addition to my wardrobe.

trench coat- Target

My post is so late today because I spent most of the evening working on my costume.  I'm happy to report that it's pretty much done!  I finished sewing the circle skirt (using this tutorial), which was fairly easy, except when my old sewing machine was being finicky, and decorating the other elements involved.  You'll get to see the full outfit sometime this weekend ;)  Hope you're having fun with your Halloween preparations!

sneak peek

Here's a sneak peek of what the skirt for my Halloween costume is going to look like!  Now I have all the elements, I just have to assemble them (yay Joann's!).  This is going to involve some sewing, which I'm no expert at, so wish me luck!

getting crafty

Cupcakes Take the Cake
Aren't these the cutest?  For the past few days, I've been really struggling with my Halloween costume.  I couldn't figure out how to translate tightrope walker into a recognizable costume.  Working with the materials I had already purchased, I considered other costumes, like trapeze artist or elephant rider and realized that those were even less translatable than a tightrope walker.  So I went back to being a tightrope walker, but I wasn't happy with it.  I told a bunch of my friends what I was thinking about doing for my costume and they convinced me even more that no one would get my costume.  But then, I had a breakthrough!  I've decided to make several key elements for my costume and I'm going shopping for materials tomorrow.  Now I'm excited again and I hope I can bring my vision to life!  This is just what I wanted anyway, to be something interesting and to get crafty with my costume :)

autumn comfort

Here's how I treat a warm fall day- by wearing my cozy new cardigan!  This shrug took me almost two months, on and off, to make, but I'm very pleased with the results.  The fit is good and the neutral creme color fills a void in my sweater collection :)

belt- forever 21, zebra-striped flats (target)

Finally I was able to try out this cool knot with my belt that I've seen on many other blogs!  Also, this is the first time that I've worn this belt, even though it's been many months since I bought it (did I mention that I do that?)  So I was able to throw together this outfit on Monday, but lately, I've been having a lot of trouble getting dressed.  I have many ideas of outfits I want to try, but when I wake up in the morning and am getting ready for class and I'm standing in front of my closet, I just get super flustered, I can no longer visualize the outfit I wanted, and I grab the easiest thing to put on.  Which sucks, because this didn't use to happen to me!  Does anyone else have this problem?  What should I do?

you snooze, you lose

Snoozer Loser

This picture pretty much sums up what my life has been recently, up until now.  Last week, I was feeling pretty defeated by schoolwork and such.  To make it even worse, I left everything until the last minute which made me crazy for several days (as I knew it would).  Instead of doing work, I did a lot of knitting, which I'm somewhat happy with, considering that I did at least accomplish one thing.  However, I need to get my priorities in line and focus.  The one good thing is that killing myself to get something done (in this case reading a 600-page novel for class in less than 24 hours) actually paid off this time!  The class that vanquished me last week was my friend today.  And to top it all off, my new boots came today and they are just what I wanted!  So I'm feeling pretty good right now, which will hopefully transfer into great productivity tonight :)  Knitting/outfit post tomorrow!

samoas

At my school, I am one of the managers for my college's late-night snack bar.  The nights I work, Tuesdays, is called Creative Cuisine Night, and I try to make special treats that we don't normally serve throughout the week.  I've been having a lot of fun experimenting with recipes and rediscovering that I do actually like to cook, and especially bake.  All of things I've made so far, including soft pretzels, blueberry and chocolate chip muffins, oven-bakes chimichangas, and samoas bars, except for one (darn you stir-fry beef and broccoli), have been a success!  My latest treat were these Samoas Bars and I got the recipe from a blog I read, Redvines for Breakfast.  They are like the girl-scout cookie, super tasty and easier to make, and they sold out within an hour!  Now it's time to figure out what I'm going to make this Tuesday!

domestic

Before my friend Natalia started the knitting club in my college, there was a group called SODA (Society of the Domestic Arts).  While I don't think that's the best name for a club, I do like the idea of a club that incorporates all of those different crafts, like knitting, sewing, crocheting, embroidering, etc.  That's sort of what my outfit does- combine crafts that I enjoy.

sweater: el otoño morado- handmade, dress- forever 21, necklace- ReneeLoughlin

This sweater is my favorite thing that I've ever knitted and I love to wear it!  Also, I got the idea for the necklace from a blogger that I really admire, WishWishWish.  When I saw her necklace, I just had to have one of my own!

cutesy

Today, I was going for a very cutesy look, and incorporated some of my newer items!  I love these little bow earrings-

tightrope walker

Two things: (1)  I've finally decided what I'm going to be for Halloween- tightrope walker!  After brainstorming a bunch of really bad ideas with my suitemates,  we finally settled on being a small band of circus performers.  One of my suitemates is going to be a ringmaster and the other is going to be a dark, deranged clown, who recently got fired from our group and is coming back to get her revenge (she created that back story herself, haha!).  So I'm really excited and hope that my finished costume is cute and looks like tightrope walker (I'm a little afraid that I might cross into ballerina territory).  I want to look something like this:

old-fashioned tightrope walker
(2)  I seriously cannot spend any more money for a while.  I checked my bank account and I am walking the thin line over the chasm of bankruptcy.  I know I have a problem, in the sense that if I want something, I buy it.  I have to stop, at least for a couple of weeks, and hopefully writing it down here will help me stick to it.

so now it's fall?

So everyday this week, I've consistently been taking pictures of my outfits, so that I could post them here.  I meant to post them individually, but I didn't get to it, so here they come all at once (I've got to get better at that)!  Sorry, I know that there are some lame mirror shots (I don't have anyone to take them for me!) and I'm still figuring out how to take the pictures by myself.  At least you'll be able to get a sense of what the outfits are like.

Monday: grey jacket- old, black cardigan- old,
olive green dress- forever 21, black otk boots- urbanog.com

Tuesday: white cardigan- old, Yale tee- forever 21,
jeans- forever 21, black scrunched boots- Thom Brown

coat- forever 21

Wednesday: dress- forever 21

ring- H&M

Thursday: teal cardigan and lace
cami- forever 21, skirt- Target

This week has been kind of up and down.  It started out fine, then from Tuesday onward, little sucky things kept happening every day.  By Thursday, I was feeling pretty bummed, so I decided to take an impromptu shopping trip (by which I mean, I had to reserve a car, because I don't have my car here at school).  This decision turned out to be absolutely fabulous for my mood and my closet, but absolutely terrible for my bank account.  Like, I spent way more than I should have! But what's the big deal- isn't that why I'm working anyway?? ;)  My new purchases will definitely be showing up in future posts, but I do this really weird thing that when I get new things, I don't always want to wear them right away.  I usually want to wait until I have the perfect outfit in mind, then bring it to life.  In fact, I like finding things in my closet that are 4 months old, but still new with tags!  Isn't that weird? Does anyone else do that?

two in one, you deserve more!

Have I had a knitting post yet? I don't think so.  Well it's about time!  One of the first projects that we did in Knitting Club this year was moebius knitting.  Basically, it is knitting with a twist so that your project forms an infinite circle.  We had several options, including a moebius basket or cowl, and I decided to make the cowl.  I used Malabrigo Worsted in a color called "purple mystery" (how cool is that?!).  It only took a few days to make and is very cozy.  When I finished it, I tried out several ways of wearing it, and decided that I like it best wrapped once around my neck, then around my head like a thick headband.  Which way would you wear it?

the prodigal daughter returns

You haven't heard from me in a while, have you?  Sorry about that.  For this first month of school, I was so busy getting my life together, that I thought I didn't have time to post.  Well now it's October, my life is not completely together, and I decided I'm just going to post anyway.  That's why I started this whole thing in the first place.  I knew it was going to be a challenge, and I'm not really standing up well to the challenge if I disappear for a month.  So I'm going to pick up from where I left off and keep doing what I was doing.

Part of what I was working on was my dorm room.  I posted earlier about how it was really hard for me to figure out what sort of theme I wanted to go for.  Well I started with the tapestry I purchased, then things just sort of fell into place, and I think it turned out rather nice.  See for yourself and tell me what you think!
